Toby Alderweireld has enjoyed a great spell at Tottenham Hotspur, and is set to commit his future to the club.
Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld
A report in the Daily Mail has suggested that Tottenham fans are about to receive a major boost with Toby Alderweireld set to sign a new contract that will also involve one of the potentially-worrying clauses of his previous deal being removed.
The Belgian’s current contract involves a clause that will allow other teams to trigger a release clause in 2019 – had Spurs taken up the one-year option that would have seen his deal extended to 2020 – that would allow a transfer to take place for £25 million (via Mail), which, while that is a lot for most players who would have just one year left on their contract, would arguably still be a bargain for Alderweireld.
However, it seems that the new contract the former Southampton man is about to sign is a lot simpler. The Mail reports that Alderweireld is close to putting pen to paper on a five-year contract which will see him earn £75,000 a week, with no release clause involved.
Given that teammate Harry Kane is earning a six-figure salary each week (via The Sun), it could be argued that getting Alderweireld to sign such a contract would be a brilliant piece of business from Tottenham.

The 27-year-old has been brilliant since arriving at White Hart Lane, and his partnership with Jan Vertonghen has been a key reason for Mauricio Pochettino’s side’s emergence as title contenders over the last couple of years.
And getting Alderweireld to confirm that he is committed to spending the best years with Spurs without the slightly concerning clause in the background is a major boost to the club’s hopes of realising their ambitions in the future.
