Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly furious with their South American contingent.
Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso find themelves at the forefront of an international storm after the Brazil vs Argentina game on Sunday night.
The World Cup qualifier was suspended after five minutes and officially abandoned an hour later when Tottenham pair Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero – and Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez – were confronted on the field by Brazilian health authorities.
Because they had travelled from the UK to Brazil, they were required to self-isolate for a period of 14 days, which obviously would’ve ruled them out of the game.
Spurs did not give the players permission to report for international duty and therefore the pair – along with Colombia defender Davinson Sanchez – are set to be fined by the club, according to The Evening Standard.
Sanchez
The former Ajax powerhouse, a £42 million signing under Mauricio Pochettino in 2017, travelled to Paraguay.
And with that also being considered a red-list country by the UK government, he too will be fined by the Lilywhites.
Tottenham refused their South American stars permission to report for international duty but The Standard added that ultimately they were powerless to prevent them.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side come up against Crystal Palace on Saturday and, with it being an early kickoff, it remain to be seen whether Lo Celso, Romero and Sanchez are available.
