Tottenham Hotspur’s Victor Wanyama may not be heading out on international duty.

According to Goal, Tottenham Hotspur are reluctant to let Victor Wanyama head off on international duty with Kenya this week, putting them in a club-versus-country row.

Spurs may have opened the season with three wins in a row, but they have gone into the international break having lost 2-1 at Watford on Sunday afternoon.

One positive to come out of the defeat at Vicarage Road was that midfielder Victor Wanyama returned from injury to take a place on the bench, though he wasn’t brought on by Mauricio Pochettino.

Wanyama, 27, enjoyed a dream debut season with Spurs following an £11.5million, £70,000-a-week (The Sun) switch from Southampton in the summer of 2016, but he endured a difficult campaign last term.

The midfielder missed chunks of the season through injury, starting just eight Premier League games before picking up a knee knock during pre-season.

Now, Goal report that Tottenham are reluctant to let Wanyama go away on international duty with Kenya, claiming that they want to keep him in North London to ensure he is fully fit rather than risk him travelling away to play before he is ready.

Kenya have submitted their request to take Wanyama away, but sources suggest that they haven’t been given a proper answer – and now think there is little chance of him joining up with the rest of the squad.

Spurs may want Wanyama fit and ready to face Liverpool after the break, and sending him away with Kenya may put him in danger of missing that game – though it’s unclear just what Wanyama wants to do at this stage.
