Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly battle Arsenal for the Newcastle United star this summer.

Tottenham are ready to reignite their interest in Newcastle defender Fabian Schar, but will have to see off competition from Arsenal if they want to land the centre-back this summer, according to a report from the Daily Mirror.

The Mirror reports that Spurs and the Gunners both had their eye on Schar while he was playing with Basel, and have been impressed by the way that he has adapted to the Premier League after moving to St James’ Park for £3 million last summer.

Schar has been a revelation for the Magpies. He has made 18 Premier League appearances for Rafa Benitez’s side, and has scored three goals, including the stunner against Burnley last month.

It is not clear what Newcastle would want as a fee for Schar, but you would imagine that Spurs and Arsenal would have to offer the Magpies the chance to make a huge profit on the 27-year-old before they reluctantly agreed to a deal.

It would appear to be a bigger coup for Unai Emery’s men if they could land Schar based on this season’s form. Their defence certainly needs strengthening this summer with none of the top seven conceding more goals than Arsenal.

But with Toby Alderweireld’s future at Spurs potentially in doubt this summer (via Telegraph), Mauricio Pochettino may also feel forced to prioritise a defensive signing during the next window.

And perhaps Schar may be the man that Pochettino believes could fill the void that Alderweireld may end up leaving if he does move on at the end of the season.
