Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld could head for Manchester United this summer.
According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to see Toby Alderweireld leave the club for Manchester United this summer.
Spurs have seen Alderweireld star since his 2015 move from Atletico Madrid, becoming one of the Premier League’s top centre backs alongside ex-Ajax and Belgium international teammate Jan Vertonghen.
However, there has been one major concern for Spurs over the last year, and that’s with Alderweireld’s contract situation and a possible exit from the North London club.
Alderweireld’s contract was set to expire this summer, but Spurs activated a one-year option to keep him until 2020 – but in doing so, enabled a £26million release clause which can be activated this summer.
With a new long-term contract seemingly unlikely, Spurs now look set to lose Alderweireld to that release clause amount, with United leading the race for his signature – and they would be forcing Tottenham into a deal by activating that clause.
The 30-year-old would seemingly head to Old Trafford to partner Victor Lindelof in the heart of the United defence, offering a proven option alongside a burgeoning talent.
For Spurs, it’s a bitter pill to swallow having seen Alderweireld impress so much over the last four years, and watching him join a Premier League rival will sting even more.
There is still time for Spurs to come up with a new contract offer, but it’s not looking likely, and with the club seemingly preparing for his move to United, centre back targets could be in mind for Mauricio Pochettino and co.
