According to a report from Football London, Tottenham duo Gareth Bale and Ben Davies pushed strongly for the club to sign their Wales compatriot Joe Rodon from Swansea.
It looked like time may have been running out, but Daniel Levy managed to secure the 22-year-old’s signature on deadline day after an £11 million deal plus add-ons was agreed.
Rodon – who has seven caps for the Wales national team – knows Bale and Davies well, so it’s no surprise to see that the forward and the full-back pushed for his arrival.
It definitely looks like Tottenham have a player on their hands.
Steve Cooper, who managed Rodon at Swansea, described him as a ‘popular’ lad when talking to the BBC.
He said: ‘He was having a fantastic season. I can’t praise him enough for how he has conducted himself in rehab to get back. It’s given everyone else a boost because he is a very popular lad.’
The centre-back has signed a five-year deal with Spurs, and become Jose Mourinho’s seventh signing of the summer.
The ex-Real Madrid and Chelsea boss had also been handed Carlos Vinicius, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon, Joe Hart and Bale by Levy during the window.
Tottenham now look immeasurably stronger than they did last term, and all of their signings help add quality to the squad.
A few of them – notably Bale and Vinicius – may presumably make their debuts against West Ham later on Saturday, so keep an eye out for Mourinho’s teamsheet.
