Report: Tottenham offered chance to sign £120k-a-week man from Premier League rivals

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Eintracht Frankfurt’s ace Bas Dost but would prefer a short-term loan to a £5 million permanent move, while the Guardian claims they have also been offered Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke.

With Fernando Llorente underwhelming and Vincent Janssen more Afonso Alves or Matija Kezman than Luis Suarez or Ruud van Nistelrooy, it is fair to say Spurs have made a meal of finding a back-up striker capable of easing the burden on Harry Kane.

Jose Mourinho has made it abundantly clear that signing a new number nine is a must before the October transfer deadline, with Carlos Vinicius, Arkadiusz Milik and Troy Deeney all mentioned as potential targets of late.

A rangy Dutchman and an out-of-form Belgian have now entered the scene.

Netherlands international Dost is a genuine option. But it seems there is work to be done before a deal can be struck.

Frankfurt would sell the 31-year-old for just £5 million. But Tottenham are unwilling to pay even an affordable transfer fee for the former Heerenveen, Wolfsburg and Sporting Lisbon targetman with Dost a loan target instead.

An old-school, penalty box poacher who dines out on close-range tap-ins, Dost scored eight times in 24 games at Frankfurt last term. Whether Spurs have the requisite creativity to serve up the chances he needs on a silver platter remains to be seen.

The Guardian adds that the 2019 Champions League finalists have also been offered the chance to sign £27 million Benteke from London rivals Crystal Palace, who are desperate to get his £120,000-a-week wages off their books.

The Belgian international is precisely the kind of powerhouse number nine Mourinho loves.

But, with just six Premier League goals since the start of 2017/18, Benteke hardly looks like the solution to Tottenham’s attacking woes.
