Tottenham Hotspur have made a move to sign promising French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, report L’Equipe.

Mateta, 19, plays for French Ligue 2 side Châteauroux – but potentially not for much longer.

He scored a hat-trick in midweek on his first game of the season, leading the line superbly in a 5-2 win over Le Havre in the Coupe de la Ligue

Châteauroux are keen to keep him but Tottenham and Montpellier are both negotiating over his signature.

While no fee has been agreed, the L’Equipe report states Tottenham have offered the striker a four-year contract.

France Bleu report that one possibility is that Tottenham sign Mateta but loan him back to Châteauroux for the season.

He is currently under contract until 2018, having signed a new deal in January.

The approach from Spurs is more evidence of the club’s desire to snap up promising talents from around Europe, and shows activity is very much ongoing despite head of recruitment Paul Mitchell handing in his resignation earlier this month.
