Tottenham Hotspur are actively trying to terminate the contract of defender Serge Aurier tonight having snapped up Emerson Royal on deadline day.

That’s according to French outlet RMC Sport (22:40 French time), who claim that Aurier will not be seeing out the final year of his Tottenham contract.

Instead, Tottenham are in talks to pay Aurier up and give him compensation to leave North London as a free agent.

Tottenham have been trying to sell Aurier this summer, but with no takers, they are left with the last option – to terminate his deal and get him out of the club.

Tottenham signed a new right back earlier today as Serge Aurier came in from Barcelona, penning a five-year deal with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

That left Tottenham with four right backs; current incumbent Japhet Tanganga, Matt Doherty, Aurier and new arrival Emerson.

Those numbers just don’t work for Tottenham, and they are now trying to get Aurier paid up and out of the door by the end of the night.

The timing is key, as if Aurier is gone by 11pm, he will be able to find another club. If he is paid up after 11pm, he would have to wait until January to find a new club.

Branded ‘so good and fast’ by Pep Guardiola, Aurier often showed flashes of his quality but just never enough to be Tottenham’s first-choice right back, and that’s why he is on the verge of being axed.
