Tottenham Hotspur have made contact over a potential move for Athletic Bilbao boss Marcelino, so say The Athletic.

It’s claimed that the representatives of Marcelino have been contacted as Spurs attempt to find a replacement for Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho lost his job as Spurs boss on Monday morning, and Daniel Levy will now look to find a replacement ahead of next season.

Ryan Mason is in charge until the end of the campaign, but it looks like Spurs are very interested in Marcelino having initiated contact about a move.

The 55-year-old has spent his entire coaching career in Spain, spanning back to 1997 when he began managing lowly CD Lealtad at the age of 33.

Marcelino really excelled with Villarreal and then Valencia, winning around half of his games with each side before heading to Athletic earlier this year.

Marcelino guided Athletic to a Supercopa de Espana final win in January, though did lose both Copa del Rey finals as last year’s final took place earlier this month.

One thing that may concern Spurs fans is that Marcelino was once compared to Juande Ramos – another Spanish coach – who famously flopped as Tottenham boss.

Marcelino had been appointed Sevilla boss at the time, the club where Ramos was a hero, and he admitted that he felt Ramos had pulled off ‘extraordinary’ work there.

The Spanish press seemingly saw similarities between the pair, but Spurs may well hope that isn’t the case if Daniel Levy does move for him.
