The Mail claim Tottenham have made RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol their number-one target ahead of the summer – despite the Croatian being valued at £50million. He rejected a move to Leeds in the summer of 2020.

Gvardiol, 20, joined Leipzig last summer and with Ibrahima Konate moving to Liverpool, and Dayot Upamecano joining Bayern Munich, he has been first choice. He has already played 33 times in all competitions for Leipzig.

Whether that is at centre-back, left-back or on the left of a back three, the nine-time Croatia international has certainly impressed. He has even had a hand in five goals, scoring twice and laying on three assists for Leipzig.

That form has impressed Tottenham. They have decided to make him their top centre-back target – above Sven Botman and Pau Torres. Gvardiol chose to turn Leeds down back in 2020, with an £18million fee agreed.

Tottenham eye Gvardiol: Croatian star would be a superb signing

When signing a 20-year-old player, normally it is deemed as one for the future. But Gvardiol would immediately improve Tottenham’s option on the left of their back three – in the form of Wales international Ben Davies.

Davies is solid. A consistent performer that will always give you a six or a seven. Never a four, but never a nine. Gvardiol is an improvement on that, and has the potential to get better and better. £50million is an investment.
