Tottenham are planning to keep a keen eye on Ajax starlet Frenkie de Jong over the season as Mauricio Pochettino considers a big-money move for the youngster, according to a report from the Express.

Spurs endured a quiet window this summer. And while the early signs suggest that it does not appear to have hurt their chances of success this term – they sit fourth in the Premier League and could go top with a win at Watford today – it would be little surprise if the club were a little more determined to make up for lost time in future windows.

And one player that Tottenham reportedly want to have a serious look at over the coming months is de Jong, arguably the brightest prospect in an Ajax side that seemingly churns out brilliant talent with ease.

The Express reports that the Barcelona-linked 21-year-old is set to be scouted by Spurs throughout the season as they weigh up a potential move for the £40 million-rated Dutchman.

It would be a superb statement of intent from Tottenham if they managed to land de Jong at some stage in the future given the potential he is showing as well as the presence of Barca amongst the queue of interested clubs.

Vincent Janssen’s nightmare spell with Spurs may leave Daniel Levy slightly reluctant to splash out significant money on a player who is making a name for himself in the Eredivisie, but de Jong looks as though he would be able to follow the same sort of path as Christian Eriksen or Davinson Sanchez rather than one trodden by the former AZ striker.

Sanchez has made an extremely bright start to life with Spurs following his switch from Ajax, while Eriksen is arguably one of the most gifted playmakers in the Premier League. And it could be argued that de Jong – with his ability to play in defence and midfield and provide numerous assists – could prove to be as inspired a signing as the Dane if Tottenham do make a move at some stage.
