Tottenham Hotspur reportedly remain interested in the Real Madrid midfielder but are not planning a move for now.
According to a report from Spanish website Diario Gol, Tottenham Hotspur maintain their interest in Real Madrid’s Mateo Kovacic, seeing him as an ideal replacement for Dele Alli if the England international leaves in the future.
For that reason, Spurs’ interest is said to be on the back-burner, and while AS Roma are said to be considering a move for the £26.4million-rated midfielder, it is telling that Tottenham are casting the net wide for potential replacements for their current superstars.
The simple fact is, Tottenham are not going to sell Alli any time soon and the player surely has no desire to leave as long as Mauricio Pochettino’s side is moving in the right direction.
As Chelsea’s closest title challengers last time out Tottenham made real progress and with the right additions this summer they could finally see some silverware back in their trophy cabinet, even if they have to get used to their relatively new surroundings of Wembley for domestic as well as European action.
At 23, Kovacic will represent a snip at the alleged price, and slipping in and out of the starting line-up at the Bernabeu is not what he will want as he approaches his mid-twenties.
Tottenham do not need Kovavic as long as they have Alli and his fellow Spurs midfielders, but if things change it seems Pochettino already has his eye on a potential replacement, even if he will have to play much further forward than he has for much of his time in Madrid.
