Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a move for Southampton star Alex McCarthy this summer.

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Spurs are considering making a summer move to sign Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy as Mauricio Pochettino eyes a new backup for Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham’s number two for the last few years has been Michel Vorm, but the Mirror reports that the 34-year-old is out of contract this summer and Pochettino is seemingly looking towards his old club for his potential replacement.

McCarthy has a host of clubs chasing his signature, with the Daily Mirror reporting that the Saints ace is catching the eye of Wolves, Arsenal and Liverpool after a superb run of form in the St Mary’s goal that earned him the club’s Player of the Season award.

The 28-year-old began the campaign as Fraser Forster’s understudy, but took full advantage of Forster’s poor form and was superb towards the end of the season. His performances between the sticks were undoubtedly one of the key reasons that Mark Hughes’ men remain a Premier League side having come desperately close to going down.

The Mirror suggests that McCarthy has one year left on his deal with Southampton and Pochettino believes that he could improve Spurs’ options with Vorm seemingly destined for the exit.

While joining Tottenham would surely be an extremely tempting option for McCarthy given that they could offer Champions League football and the chance to be a part of a side that is looking to battle for the Premier League title, it would perhaps be understandable if his preference would be to stay at Southampton.

McCarthy has spent much of his career as a backup, having made more than 20 league appearances in a single campaign on just two occasions. Now that he has that number one role on the south coast, he would be forgiven for wanting to stay exactly where he is rather than roll the dice and go to Spurs to probably be Lloris’ understudy.
