Reports emerged on Wednesday night that Newcastle had been joined by a Premier League club, and an Italian one in the pursuit of Diego Carlos. Now, The Mail report those sides are Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan.

Carlos, 28, is being strongly linked with a move to Newcastle this month. Numerous reports state that a deal is looking increasingly likely, with the player himself said to be keen on moving to Tyneside before the deadline.

The Guardian reported on Wednesday that Newcastle were closing in on a £30million move, with the player touted to have handed in a transfer request. But now, Spurs seemingly have competition for his signature.

Indeed, Tottenham are also on the lookout for a central defender – though much more likely to target a left-footed one to rival Ben Davies. But Japhet Tanganga could move to Milan, and Carlos could come in.

Tottenham join Newcastle in Carlos race: One of Spain’s best defenders

In La Liga, Carlos is right up there. He is easily one of Spanish football’s best defenders. A powerhouse with incredible strength and pace, solid in the air but also superb with the ball at his feet – he has a bit of everything.

Yes, he would be Tottenham’s best defender. But Spurs have Eric Dier in the middle in good form and Cristian Romero returning on the right. They would be signing in a player in a position that requires little strengthening.

Newcastle need Carlos so much more than Tottenham, with Spurs simply needing a left-footed defender. The Toon desperately need a centre-back or two, and Carlos seems the most-likely in the coming days.
