Tottenham Hotspur may be in the market for a new centre back this summer.
Rumours of Toby Alderweireld’s potential Tottenham Hotspur exit continue – and Spurs are again being linked with a move for Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez.
Alderweireld, 29, has starred in the heart of the Spurs defence since – ironically – signing from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015, reuniting with Jan Vertonghen in a superb partnership.
However, the Daily Mail now report that Spurs won’t match Alderweireld’s demands of a five-year deal worth nearly £200,000-a-week, and manager Mauricio Pochettino has now told him he can leave this summer.
Whilst Davinson Sanchez has starred since his move from Ajax last summer, Spurs would surely be in the market for a new centre back to replace Alderweireld, and links with Atletico’s Gimenez are again surfacing.
Back in November, Tutto Mercato Web reported that Spurs were keen on Gimenez, and they again report that Tottenham want the Uruguayan international amid questions over his Atletico future.
Gimenez, 23, burst onto the scene with Atletico in 2013 following a move from Danubio, quickly becoming a star under Diego Simeone whilst striking up a superb defensive partnership with compatriot Diego Godin.
However, the defender lost his place to Stefan Savic for much of last season, and has only recently started to impress for Atletico again this season, prompting speculation that he could move on to pursue a guaranteed starting role.
Given his huge potential, Gimenez would be something of a coup for Spurs, especially as Arsenal and Manchester United are also claimed to be keen, though whether he could supplant Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen is another matter, but he would be the calibre of signing that Spurs fans want if Alderweireld does go.
