According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Jonathan Clauss as a potential alternative to Djed Spence.
The Middlesbrough wing-back has long been touted as one of Tottenham’s number one targets heading into this summer transfer window, but with the London club £5m short of Boro’s valuation of Spence right now, a deal remains up in the air.
Luckily, Spurs have a contingency plan in place, as Sky are reporting that the Lilywhites are eyeing up both Clauss and Wilfried Singo.
Singo has been touted as a potential target for some time now, but Clauss is a new link and an interesting one at that.
The Frenchman looks like the perfect Antonio Conte player. He’s an attack-minded wing-back with a hell of an engine on him.
Ligue 1’s official website summed him up perfectly with their description:
‘Wing-back Clauss bombs up and down the Lens right flank every weekend. He covers more than 10 kilometres a game, and performs 20 sprints on average, more than any other Lens player.’
According to the profile written by Ligue 1, Clauss was actually ranked as the best outfield player in France during the 2020/21 season as rated by Lequipe, and that is no easy feat.
Indeed, Clauss has had to beat out the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe to that accolade, so it’s fair to say he has plenty of quality.
Spurs’ number one target appears to be Spence, but if they miss out on the former Nottingham Forest loanee, Clauss wouldn’t be a bad alternative.
