For some reason, Everton have reportedly renewed their interest in Spurs misfit Moussa Sissoko.
Hindsight does not reflect well on Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to spend £30 million on Newcastle United’s Moussa Sissoko with just seconds remaining of last summer’s transfer window, as reported by the BBC.
After a disastrous debut season in North London, where the Frenchman more closely resembled the disinterested figure sloping round the pitch at St James’ Park rather than the dynamic enforcer who shone in the Euro 2016 final, the phrase ‘panic buy’ comes to mind.
However, Spurs washing their hands of Sissoko is easier said than done. After all, L’Equipe (17th August, page 9) claim that Tottenham would want to recoup the £30 million they paid 12 months ago – a rather ambitious demand that has made Everton think twice about renewing their interest in the 28-year-old.
The report claims that The Toffees, who have had no qualms about spending big this summer, will not go near Tottenham’s valuation. The Sun reported earlier this summer that Everton had made a request to take Sissoko on loan but L’Equipe adds that Spurs will reject any temporary offers.
However, it’s fair to say Everton supporters won’t be losing much sleep over another failure to land Sissoko. After all, the French international showed little interest in signing for The Toffees last summer, The Mirror reporting that he ignored calls from Everton boss Ronald Koeman as he tried to sign him on deadline day last summer.
“Why would I have joined Everton? Spurs are a bigger club,” Sissoko later mused, further alienating Everton fans.
A more pertinent question may be ‘why would Everton want me?’.
Sissoko hardly impressed when given a rare start by Mauricio Pochettino in Spurs’ opening day victory at former club Newcastle on Sunday, hauled off after 58 minutes following a clumsy display.
And it appears he will spend the next 12 months in limbo.
