Brazilian attacker Bernard is due to undergo a medical with Everton today after agreeing to sign for the Toffees, The Guardian report.

Everton have beaten competition from several clubs for the free agent, whose contract with Shakhtar Donetsk expired in June.

The Guardian report Tottenham Hotspur were one of the clubs who registered an interest with Bernard, but were put off by his wage demands.

The paper claim Bernard wanted £200,000 per week, a figure which would have made him Tottenham’s top earner by a long distance.

West Ham and Chelsea also backed off after hearing Bernard’s demands.

The Guardian claim Bernard has since lowered his wage demands, and Everton will not be paying as much as £200,000 per week, but it does not specify exactly how much they have agreed with him.

Everton need to land a work permit for Bernard in order for the deal to go through.
