Tottenham Hotspur have been overtaken by Leicester City in the race to sign Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare, according to the Daily Star.

It’s claimed that the Foxes are now ‘increasingly confident’ of signing Soumare in a £30million deal at the end of the season.

Manchester United and Tottenham have both shown ‘strong interest’ in Soumare, but Leicester suddenly think they’re winning the race.

Soumare, 22, is described as ‘the next Paul Pogba’ in the article, a tag he has held for many years now.

The French talent arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, and has been a key player for Lille ever since, making 26 league appearances this season.

Soumare has previously been close to a Premier League move, but turned down Newcastle United in January 2020.

A move to Leicester may be more appealing, though they do have other midfielders like Wilfred Ndidi, Youri Tielemans, Dennis Praet and James Maddison.

Tottenham could give him the most playing time, but given how Jose Mourinho and Pogba butted heads, Soumare may be taking a risk by joining Spurs..

Leicester seem to have a greater shot at Champions League football too, with Spurs potentially set to miss out.
