According to The Independent, Tottenham Hotspur are still hopeful that they will be able to sign Antonio Rudiger from Chelsea on transfer deadline day.

It has been reported that AS Roma are looking at signing Rudiger from Chelsea, with their move to secure the services of Chris Smalling from Manchester United on the brink of collapsing.

Roma have been offered the option to sign Rudiger as an alternative, but Tottenham ‘still retain hope’ of bringing the Germany international centre-back to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, according to the report.

It has been claimed that Tottenham feel that head coach Jose Mourinho can persuade the 27-year-old centre-back to move to the North London club.

Could a late transfer deal happen?

Rudiger is a very good central defender, and the 27-year-old would make Tottenham better at the back.

However, it remains to be seen if Chelsea would be willing to do a deal with their London and Premier League rivals Tottenham.

After all, Chelsea and Spurs are fighting for the Champions League places this season, and the Blues may not be willing to strengthen Mourinho’s team.
