Jan Vertonghen currently has less than a year left on his contract at Tottenham Hotspur.
Vertonghen is now 32, and Tottenham typically like to move players on when they get beyond the wrong side of 30.
However, Vertonghen is still playing a key role for Spurs and there is a reluctance to lose him on a free.
Tottenham have now entered talks over a contract extension for the Belgian international, but there is still some way to go before they reach an agreement.
Spurs are keen to offer Vertonghen just another year, as they are ‘apprehensive’ to keep him for longer, but the centre-back may want some more security.
The Mail point out that Vertonghen could use Moussa Sissoko’s contract as a ‘bargaining tool’.
Sissoko recently penned a four year deal with Tottenham, despite only being two years younger than Vertonghen.
If Vertonghen was to sign a new deal at Hotspur Way then it would be a big boost for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
The defender, who is currently on a £100,000-a-week deal (Spotrac), remains one of the finest players in their squad, and with the likes of Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderwerield potentially departing, Vertonghen sticking around would help Spurs’s squad look a lot more stable.
