Werder Bremen attacker David Philipp is earning rave reviews and has piqued the interest of both Spurs and Liverpool.
Few countries on Planet Earth produce gifted attacking midfielders with the same success, or frequency, as Germany. And Werder Bremen’s 17-year-old starlet David Phillip looks like being the latest exciting wunderkind to emerge from the nation that gave us Mesut Ozil, Mario Goetze and Leon Goretzka.
And, unsurprisingly, Sky Germany (live blog, 10.21am) are reporting that Werder have received enquiries from both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur – two of the Premier League’s top sides when it comes to identifying and developing young talent.
Philipp scored 18 goals and set up 21 more in a stunning season for Werder’s Under-18 side last season and has adapted supremely after being promoted to the Under-19s at the start of the current campaign. He has two goals to his name already, while setting up another four.
“I wouldn’t want to rule out the interest in David from the English clubs,” Bremen academy director Bjorn Schierenbeck said in quotes reported by The Sun. “But I don’t know exactly how firm it is.
“We would be very eager to continue working together with David. We have already held talks with him, and explained what his future career with Werder can look like.”
Whether Philipp has a future at Werder at all remains to be seen. Liverpool’s German manager Jurgen Klopp knows the Bundesliga better than most and is renowned for giving young players an opportunity even at the highest level.
The same goes for Spurs counterpart Mauricio Pochettino, who has helped attacking midfielders Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son take their game to new levels entirely since taking over in North London.
