Report: Tottenham Hotspur add Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo to left-back shortlist

Danny Rose is expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur and the search for his replacement is on.

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with another left-back to replace Danny Rose, with reports from Portugal claiming that Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo is on their shortlist.

Portuguese publication Jornal de Noticias, via talkSPORT, claims that Grimaldo wants to leave Benfica in January and is being watched by Spurs and Serie A leaders Napoli.

The Mirror understands that England international Rose will move to Manchester United for £50m next month, and Spurs want Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon to fill that void.

However, this report indicates that Spurs are scouting far and wide in anticipation of Rose’s departure.

Celtic hero Kieran Tierney and United’s own Luke Shaw have also been touted as options, Football.London reports.

Grimaldo joined Benfica from Barcelona in 2016 having not played a senior game for the Catalan giants, although he is the youngest player in Segunda Division history after debuting for Barcelona ‘B’ as a 15-year-old.

Now 22, the Spain-Under 21 international has appeared 43 times for Benfica, including twice against United in the Champions League this season. He has assisted eight goals and won two Primeira Liga titles.

Napoli are in the market for a left-back because of a serious injury to Faouzi Ghoulam and have been put on alert by the apparent availability of a player who is valued at £25m, according to Jornal de Noticas.
