According to Sky Sports, Tottenham have beaten Brentford to the signing of Will Lankshear, who was released by Arsenal in 2021.
What’s the story?
Well, Spurs have actually spent £2m to sign the 17-year-old from Sheffield United.
Clearly, Fabio Paratici – Director of Football at Tottenham – thinks very highly of the teenager.
Sky Sports believe Brentford had been tracking Lankshear for some time, and felt they had reached an agreement to sign him from Sheffield United before Spurs blew them out of the water with a huge offer.
His return to north London comes just one year after those at Arsenal decided he wasn’t good enough to stay at Hale End, so he will presumably be desperate to prove the Gunners wrong.
Sky Sports add that Lankshear has been “banging in goals” since joining Sheffield United, where he only had 12 months remaining on his scholarship terms.
Tottenham will pay a guaranteed £1m to the Blades, with a further £1m coming in performance related add-ons.
Brentford & Arsenal could regret losing out to Tottenham
We don’t want to put any pressure on Lankshear so soon after news of Tottenham’s agreement broke, but there are certainly similarities between him and Harry Kane.
As most people know nowadays, Arsenal actually released Kane when he was just nine – the Gunners felt he was “a bit chubby” and “not very athletic” as Liam Brady told Sky Sports.
He then joined Spurs, where – like Lankshear – he became a physical powerhouse capable of scoring goals at an astonishing rate.

At the age of just 17, Lankshear has already captained the Sheffield United Under-18 side, and also featured for their Under-23 side as a reward for his fine displays.
Tottenham look to have got themselves a huge prospect, and if he can stay fit, there is no reason why he can’t go on to emulate Kane in N17.
