According to The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur have reservations behind the scenes about the idea of signing Youri Tielemans from Leicester City after Fabrizio Romano claimed they were in the race for the Belgian earlier this week.
Tielemans is reportedly leaving Leicester this summer as he enters the final year of his contract, and while his contract situation may mean that he’s available for a cut-price fee, Spurs aren’t completely sold on the idea of bringing the Foxes star to north London.
The Telegraph don’t divulge what Spurs’ worries are, but given that Antonio Conte likes to have more mobile midfielders with a high work-rate, we have to imagine that there may be concerns about how Tielemans will fit in tactically.
The Belgian is undoubtedly a huge talent. After all, he was described as ‘incredible’ a few months ago by Michael Dawson, but in a system as convoluted as Conte’s you have to be the right fit rather than just a brilliant footballer.
Spurs reportedly want two midfielders through the door this summer, so additions are in the pipeline, but it seems as though Tielemans isn’t at the top of the list of Spurs’ targets heading into this crucial transfer window.
With the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United also in for Tielemans, he shouldn’t struggle to get a move, but if he had dreams of playing for Tottenham, he may have to forget about that move.
