Brighton were unable to convince the Tottenham forward to join them, despite the London club’s own transfer business on deadline day.

Tottenham Hotspur’s deadline day signing of Fernando Llorente looked to address the club’s attacking backup to talisman Harry Kane, with the Spaniard able to net an impressive 15 goals from 28 Premier League starts last season.
Unfortunately for one player, that looks to have pushed him further away from first team action, with last summer’s big money attacking arrival Vincent Janssen now pushed down to third in line for Mauricio Pochettino’s solitary striker role.
Janssen would have struggled to make a case against his club reinforcing those attacking positions, with his one goal from open play an oft-aired statistic, but according to the Mail he decided against a move to another Premier League club on deadline day, instead preferring to fight for his Spurs future.
The Mail reported that the 23-year-old was being chased by newcomers Brighton and Hove Albion, who are managed by former Tottenham favourite Chris Hughton, on loan but he snubbed the opportunity to head to the south coast instead preferring to battle it out with Llorente and Kane.

According to the Brighton and Hove Independent, Brighton were also interested in Janssen on a permanent deal late in the day, perhaps after raiding Newcastle United for Janssen’s compatriot Tim Krul on loan, therefore filling up the club’s allocation of temporary moves. But no deal was forthcoming, with Janssen’s participation in the Netherland’s 4-0 loss to France in Paris unlikely to have helped proceedings.
Whatever Brighton’s interest, Janssen remains with Spurs, and that may well be a disappointment to the north London club.
Their best bet of seeing him realise his potential and finally settle in the division would have been to get regular minutes and work on his confidence elsewhere, before returning to Tottenham next summer. With that not happening, and the former AZ man now scrapping with Llorente to fill in for Kane, he could struggle to turn his career in England around.
