Tottenham Hotspur are ‘making a dramatic late move’ for Ollie Watkins and ‘fighting hard’ with Aston Villa to sign the Brentford striker, according to The Sun on Sunday (6 September, page 61).

It is claimed that Brentford have hired an agency to sell last season’s 26-goal Championship top scorer, alerting Tottenham.

Watkins is said to have been set for Aston Villa, where his former Bees manager Dean Smith is ‘waiting with a huge contract’.

That means Spurs will have to pay around £22 million, and offer more than £70,000 a week in wages, in order to be successful, according to The Sun on Sunday.

It was reported by The Evening Standard earlier this week that Tottenham need to sell before they can buy again this window, having already spent eight-figure sums on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Docherty.

And they could be in luck with Aston Villa’s local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers ready to bid for the player Docherty has seemingly displaced, Serge Aurier, according to The Sun on Sunday.

It is claimed that Aurier can go after the Irishman’s arrival, although Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan are also keen.

And his sale could be just what Spurs need to fund a move for Watkins.

Tottenham, Aston Villa or neither – where will Watkins end up?
