According to The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur have failed with an approach to sign Southampton striker Danny Ings.
It’s claimed that Spurs made contact with Southampton about a deal for Ings, but were told that he isn’t for sale.
Jose Mourinho allegedly wants some more energy in his attack, and had identified Ings to be a pressing force from the front.
Southampton have batted Spurs away though, and there is an internal belief that Ings is as important as Virgil van Dijk when he was sold to Liverpool in 2018.
The Saints raked in more than £70million in that deal, though it’s hard to see them claiming a similar deal with Ings.
Ings is already 28, meaning a huge fee looks unlikely, and the truth is that he is more valuable to Southampton than the fee anybody would likely pay.
Spurs certainly aren’t in the position to be splashing big money on Ings, whilst the player himself may have reservations about a move.
Ings was a star at Burnley but a bit-part player with Liverpool, before becoming a star again with Southampton; going back to sitting behind a main striker, like Harry Kane, would take Ings back to square one, and that isn’t what he needs after a 22-goal campaign last season.
