Tottenham Hotspur are now facing increased competition from AC Milan to sign Sampdoria forward Mikkel Damsgaard after his Euro 2020 form, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Rossoneri have tracked the Danish attacker for some time but his efforts at the European Championship have ‘amplified everything’. Technical Director Paolo Maldini and Sporting Director Frederic Massara are now considering a bid to beat his raft of suitors.

Milan believe Damsgaard, who turns 21 on Saturday, fits perfectly with their ideal profile of target given his age. But San Siro executives also believe he fits philosophically, with their admiration stretching far beyond love at first sight.

Tottenham are also fans of Damsgaard and Fabio Paratici intends to revive the club’s pursuit, per Samp News 24. Spurs have tracked the winger for a number of months but he, too, admired him while in charge at Juventus.

Paratici submitting an offer for Damsgaard is likely, although Tottenham and Milan could face a mammoth asking price. Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero told GR Parlamento earlier this week that only bids of €30-50m (£26-43m) would start any discussions.

Milan now pose an even greater threat to Tottenham in the race for Damsgaard, yet will back down in the event of an auction. The Rossoneri would also intend to offer Sampdoria players as part of any deal, with Andrea Conti a likely option.

Milan pose increased threat to Tottenham for Damsgaard

Tottenham may be unwilling to spend up to £43m to sign Damsgaard, despite the club and Paratici’s interest, meaning Milan will pose an increased threat with their intentions to keep the fee down and avoid an auction for the versatile and unpredictable youngster.

Damsgaard could favour a move to Milan to stay in the Serie A, having joined Sampdoria for €6m (£5m) only last September. Since then, he scored two goals and four assists in 35 top-flight appearances and made his international debut in November.

Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel has been full of praise for his compatriot, too, after scoring once and providing an assist to fire Denmark to the Euro 2020 quarter-finals. He said, via One Football: “Mikkel? Shut up, what a player.

“I told Mikkel Damsgaard I had the feeling he would score [against Russia]. He was so close against Belgium and played such a fantastic match, so I thought it was the perfect time for him to get his goal. He was phenomenal.”
