Report: Tottenham face ‘almighty’ fight to sign talent as 14 clubs enter race

Tottenham will reportedly face competition from as many as 14 clubs for the signing of Middlesbrough talent Djed Spence ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to the Express, the north London side face ‘an almighty scramble’ to sign the Championship youngster following on from a January window where Antonio Conte was eager to sign Spence for Tottenham.

The on-loan Nottingham Forest star has been one of the breakout players in the EFL this season, with Spence’s performances in the FA Cup catching the eye of both supporters and pundits.

Moreover, parent side Middlesbrough seem open to selling Spence, who could move on for a club-record fee for the Riverside team, with Tottenham just one of many eyeing to sign the 21-year-old right-back.

Previous reports have linked Spence to the likes of Arsenal, Brentford, Leeds United, Liverpool and Newcastle United in recent weeks, with other clubs also keeping tabs of the Championship star ahead of the summer.

With Middlesbrough holding out for a £15m fee for Spence, Tottenham could face a huge struggle to sign the English talent given the number of clubs also chasing the youngster, yet the lure of Conte could be enough to see Spurs win the race.

Spence will no doubt be one of the most talked-about players in the summer transfer window, yet Tottenham could stand with the best shot of signing the 21-year-old based on the style Conte has played with the north London side.

Indeed, Spence is built to play at wing-back and has done this season with Forest to stunning results, and for Tottenham, the youngster can replace Matt Doherty as the club’s starting playing out on the right, which could work and also excited supporters for next season.
