Report: Tottenham could soon lose a player for £14m less than they paid for him

According to De Telegraaf, Ajax are hoping to do a deal with Tottenham worth around €15 million (£13 million) for Steven Bergwijn.

What’s the story?

Well, the information was revealed on De Telegraaf’s Kick-Off podcast.

It is said that Tottenham’s interest in Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram could be bad news for Bergwijn.

The Frenchman’s potential arrival in north London may open the exit door for the Dutchman, who really struggled under José Mourinho this season.

Disappointingly, the 23-year-old scored just one goal in 21 Premier League appearances this term.

Even that strike – a brilliant finish against Aston Villa – only arrived in the penultimate game of the season.

Now, Ajax could help him end his nightmare in England.

A £13 million sale would look awful on Daniel Levy

As if Daniel Levy wasn’t already pretty unpopular in north London, his credibility would take another hit if this deal materialised.

Of course, the fact that Ajax themselves are ‘hoping’ to complete a £13 million deal must be taken with a pinch of salt, as they’re obviously not the ones holding the cards here.

Having said that, they could get their wish – in our view.

Levy might be happy to sell in order to recoup some funds to give his new manager, which looks likely to be Paulo Fonseca.

Additionally, Fonseca – or someone else – might not even want Bergwijn.

So, if the £13 million deal does happen, it would be embarrassing for Levy.

It was less than a year-and-a-half ago that Tottenham paid £27 million to PSV Eindhoven for Bergwijn in January 2020.

If they were to accept a £14 million loss on a player who is still young, it would raise even more questions about Levy’s decision making.
