Tottenham Hotspur reportedly could challenge Liverpool for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.
The report claims that Southampton could move for Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson, if and only if they sell the 26-year-old defender.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for the Dutch defender, but the Reds officially pulled out of the deal after Southampton complained about the Reds’ unfair approach of tapping up of their player.
Van Dijk has not been selected in Southampton’s opening two matches, and his future is still up in the air. The Sunday Sun claims that Spurs could challenge the Reds for the signing of Van Dijk, and could enter into a bidding war for the defender.
Wishful thinking? Deal highly unlikely
Spurs have already agreed a £42 million fee (a club-transfer record), reported by The Guardian, for Ajax’s highly rated centre-back Davinson Sanchez, and therefore they would hardly move for another expensive defender this summer.
In any case, Tottenham would not have spent over £60 million for one single player. Van Dijk continues to get linked with top Premier League clubs, but apart from Liverpool or probably Chelsea, it is hard to think any other club would be interested in signing him.
Meanwhile, Tottenham’s first Premier League home game at Wembley ends in defeat, as they lost 2-1 against Chelsea on Sunday.
