Tottenham Hotspur look set to bid for Everton’s Ross Barkley in January.
According to the Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur could hold the advantage when it comes to signing Ross Barkley in January because they could offer him the best chance of making a late surge into England’s World Cup squad.
The midfielder looked set to leave Everton in the summer, only for a late switch to Chelsea to fall through at the death. Now it is being reported that with Barkley still hopeful of making it on to the plane with the rest of the Three Lions squad, Tottenham hold the cards due to manager Mauricio Pochettino’s history of blooding young players for international duty.
It has long been felt that Barkley will end up at Tottenham, and one wonders if his contract situation has left Spurs chairman Daniel Levy playing a game of brinkmanship in a bid to get the best possible deal.
If that is the case, he almost lost out when Chelsea swooped in on deadline day but surprisingly Barkley remains an Everton player, continuing his recovery from an injury that will see him playing catch up whichever club he turns out for in the second half of the campaign.
Tottenham look set to have plenty of players representing England when the tournament kicks off next year, so could Barkley be among them.
The latest report suggests that is what he is hoping and the pulling power of Pochettino should not be understated, especially in the year of such a major tournament.
