According to Record, Tottenham Hotspur and Benfica are studying the option of ending Gedson Fernandes’ loan spell in North London.

Spurs swooped in January 2020 to sign Fernandes, in an 18-month loan deal that included a €50million (£46million) buyout clause if he impressed.

However, Fernandes is struggling for playing time at Tottenham, with just one appearance to his name this season – and that came in the Carabao Cup.

Fernandes is stuck behind a host of midfielders, such as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Dele Alli and Moussa Sissoko, meaning it’s hard to see how he will break into the team.

Jose Mourinho tried him in a right back role over the summer, but with Serge Aurier staying put and Matt Doherty brought in, there is no room for him to play there either.

Mourinho praised him as ‘really good’ following a performance at right back in August, and Football.London reported that Mourinho had been working for months to turn Fernandes into a right back.

It seems to be in vain, as Fernandes could now head back to Benfica in January, with president Luis Felipe Vieira allegedly confirming that it could materialise.

Fernandes has been left out of Tottenham’s Europa League squad and now looks likely to move on, with his loan not going to plan and Spurs ready to cut ties.
