According to The Telegraph, Tottenham considered re-signing Kyle Walker-Peters on deadline day, while Everton were also interested.

What’s the story?

Well, it was José Mourinho who sold Walker-Peters to Southampton back in August 2020, with Spurs receiving £12m from the deal.

However, due to the struggles of Matt Doherty and Serge Aurier – whose contract has now been terminated – another right-back was wanted.

Eventually, Nuno Espirito Santo signed Emerson Royal in a £25.73m move from Barcelona.

The Telegraph‘s Mike McGrath believes Everton actually submitted an enquiry for Walker-Peters.

However, Southampton were not interested in entertaining a deal for the 24-year-old, who seems to have lost his place to Tino Livramento under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Tottenham, as aforesaid, already had right-back options, but they weren’t satisfied by them.

As a result, Fabio Paratici went out and signed one of Europe’s most promising players in that department, 22-year-old Emerson Royal.

In our view, he’s a better pickup than Walker-Peters would’ve been, as he has more pedigree and is two years younger.

In Everton’s case, Marcel Brands failed on this front, and let Rafa Benitez down.

The Toffees obviously wanted a new right-back, as they submitted a loan offer for Ainsley Maitland-Niles in addition to the Walker-Peters enquiry (The Athletic).

However, Benitez is now stuck with Seamus Coleman and Jonjoe Kenny.

Don’t get us wrong, Coleman is a fantastic right-back. However, he’s now 32, so Everton must identify an heir to his throne.

Sadly, we will have to wait until January or next summer for that to happen, after a disappointing deadline day from Everton.
