There could be more good news on the way for Tottenham Hotspur in regards to contracts.
Eric Dier put pen to paper on fresh terms this week after an encouraging month under Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, who’s been using him predominantly as a centre-back.
And according to The Evening Standard, Japhet Tanganga is the next player Tottenham are looking to sign up.
Tanganga’s emergence has been a huge plus in an otherwise fairly poor season for the North Londoners, who are seventh in the Premier League and won’t be playing Champions League football next term, despite reaching the final a year ago under Mauricio Pochettino.
But the 21-year-old – whom Mourinho gushed over back in January [BBC Sport] – is only contracted to the club until next summer and it was causing some anxiety among some Tottenham fans, given the potential he showed earlier in the campaign.
But The Standard claim that the Lilywhites are ‘close’ to signing him up to a new contract, which would include a ‘significant’ pay hike on his £1k-a-week salary.
With Tottenham potentially losing Danny Rose this summer, and money looking fairly tight, Tanganga, who can also play centre-back, could save chairman Daniel Levy a lot of money in the transfer market.
Rose will need to be replaced and it’ll be perfect if Mourinho can use the Hotspur Way graduate instead of spending some of the transfer budget on a replacement.
