The Tottenham Hotspur defender has just one year remaining on his current contract.

According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, Tottenham chiefs were quietly ‘gutted’ that there were not any clubs willing to match Toby Alderweireld’s £25 million release clause.
The 30-year-old Belgian is out of contract with Spurs next summer, and unless he is sold this summer, the north London outfit will be facing the very real prospect of losing him for nothing next year.
Alderweireld joined Tottenham from Atletico Madrid on a permanent deal in the summer of 2015, having spent the previous campaign on loan with Southampton.
And he has proved to be a fine signing for the Lilywhites.
The Belgium international had a £25 million release clause inserted into his contract, but that expired on July 26th, and it now seems more and more likely that he will remain in north London.

Manchester Evening News claims that Tottenham bigwigs were bitterly disappointed that no club matched Alderweireld’s release clause.
And whether they will be able to sell him for anywhere near £25 million now is highly doubtful.
