Tottenham Hotspur may lose Christian Eriksen in 2020.
According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur have been left ‘baffled’ by Christian Eriksen’s stance over staying at the club, with his agents refusing to even entertain the idea of staying at the club.
Eriksen, 27, suggested after the Champions League final in June that he was ready for a new challenge, having spent six years with Spurs.
The Dane has failed to land a move elsewhere though, and whilst he was dropped to the bench for last week’s trip to Aston Villa, he did start against Manchester City on Saturday evening.
With the European transfer deadline moving closer and closer, and no move seemingly on the table, Tottenham are allegedly willing to pay him more than £200,000-a-week to stay put.
However, his agents aren’t even open to the idea of remaining with Tottenham, leaving Spurs ‘baffled’, given the lack of other options he has in the market right now.
Real Madrid have seemingly back away from him, whilst Barcelona are focusing on Neymar, and Juventus have already signed Aaron Ramsey this summer.
That means that Eriksen is now considering just running his contract down and leaving for free in 2020, which is Daniel Levy’s worst nightmare.
The Spurs chairman won’t ever want to see valuable players leave for nothing, but especially one such as Eriksen, who has been so key to Mauricio Pochettino’s team for five years and continues to shine.
It’s a surprise that Eriksen isn’t even open to staying given that Spurs have shown their ambition with deals for Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso, but it seems more and more likely that he’ll be walking away for free next summer to a European heavyweight – much to Levy’s frustration.
