According to German newspaper Bild, Schalke and playmaker Max Meyer want to ‘divorce’ this summer – and Tottenham are allegedly interested again, with an asking price of €20million (£17million).

Meyer, 21, joined Schalke from Duisburg back in 2012, and has made his way up through the ranks with the Gelsenkirchen club having arrived as a teenager.

The playmaker, who already has four caps and one goal for Germany, has hit 20 goals in more than 150 games for Schalke, and despite impressing last season, he’s endured a frustrating campaign this term.

Meyer, who can play as a No. 10 or out wide, has registered just one goal and one assist in the Bundesliga, starting only 16 of Schalke’s 28 league games, despite entering the season as their big hope following the departure of Leroy Sane to Manchester City.

Now, Bild report that Meyer wants to leave Schalke this summer, and the Bundesliga side are also more than happy to part ways, given that he is refusing to sign a new contract, with less than one year left on his deal.

Schalke are now ready to cash in for around €20million (£17million), and Bild believe that Tottenham are back in for Meyer as they gear up for the summer transfer window.

Some fans will remember that Bild reported back in August 2016 that Tottenham were preparing a huge €45million (£38million) move to sign Meyer, but that deal didn’t go through.

Now, Spurs can allegedly land Meyer for around half of that price, but it would be understandable if his inauspicious season to date has dimmed their interest somewhat.

A skilful, diminutive playmaker in the mould of Spurs ace Christian Eriksen, Meyer has untapped potential, and Spurs could see him as a bargain who could thrive under Mauricio Pochettino’s guidance – and with both Meyer and Schalke keen on a summer deal, this could be the time for Spurs to strike.
