According to German outlet, Kicker, Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a €40m (£34.5m) bid for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

The Ecuadorian has been earning rave reviews over in the Bundesliga this season, and now, he’s being looked at by Spurs.

It was claimed last week that Spurs were monitoring the defender, and now, it looks like they’re set to formalise their interest.

It’s something of an open secret that Tottenham are in the market for a new left-footed defender this summer. The likes of Pau Torres and Alessandro Bastoni have been touted as top targets, but now, Hincapie seems to be one Fabio Paratici’s agenda.

Torres and Bastoni would have represented more of a ball-playing option, but Hincapie is much more of a no-nonsense defender.

No stranger to a strong tackle, Hincapie’s main focus is keeping the ball out of the back of the net, and he has actually been compared by Cristian Romero in the past.

Indeed, the South American has admitted that his own brother often compares him to Romero.

“My brother tells me I’m a lot like him, I like him a lot,” Hincapie said when speaking about Romero.

Tottenham certainly won’t mind adding a Romero replica to their backline. After all, the Argentine has been an absolute star since joining Spurs last summer, but, with Eric Dier in a similar mould, you have to imagine that Spurs will want to add at least one playmaking defender to their ranks as well.

Spurs’ hunt for a new centre-back may soon be over as they’re preparing to make an opening offer for Hincapie.
