According to a report from Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo, Tottenham and Manchester United are set to go head-to-head in the race to sign Real Madrid ace Gareth Bale in the summer.

The 28-year-old left Spurs for Madrid in the summer of 2013, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £85.3 million, but he has failed to live up to expectations during his time in the Spanish capital.

Bale’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu seems to be uncertain to say the least, especially if Madrid bring in some of their key targets in the summer.

Mundo Deportivo claim that Spurs and United will battle it out for his signature at the end of this season.

So where next for the Welshman?

A return to Tottenham would obviously be an option, and he would undoubtedly take his former club to another level.

One major stumbling block, though, would be his £300,000 per week wages, and it is highly unlikely that Daniel Levy would be willing to pay Bale anywhere near that amount.

United, on the other hand, are well capable of matching his current salary, although it could be argued that with Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard currently at the club, they don’t actually need the Wales international.

According to Don Balon, Bale could be available for around £90 million this summer, and in today’s ludicrously inflated transfer market, that would actually represent decent value, but quite where he will eventually end up is anyone’s guess.
