According to The Telegraph, James Tarkowski is now expected to sign for Everton after the expiration of his Burnley contract.
The English centre-back has been one of the most highly-coveted players in England so far this summer.
Indeed, Tarkowski is an interesting option for any Premier League club at the moment. After all, it’s not often an experienced defender with England caps to his name is available on a free transfer.
Aston Villa, Newcastle and Leeds have all been credited with an interest, but it looks as though Frank Lampard’s Everton have won the race for his signature.
Tarkowski will certainly be a welcomed addition at Goodison Park. Everton’s defence was woeful last term, and Tarkowski will bring some much-needed steel and leadership to the backline.
There’s even a chance that the Englishman could rekindle what was once a successful partnership with Michael Keane at Burnley, but after a torrid campaign for Keane, it’s more likely that Tarkowski will partner either Ben Godfrey or Yerry Mina next term.
Everton’s transfer policy has received plenty of criticism in recent years as the Merseyside club have overspent and players who have consistently underdelivered, but signing the ‘top’ defender on a free would certainly be a massive step in the right direction for Lampard’s side.
Fingers crossed this signing will help Everton stay well clear of any potential relegation battle next season after narrowly beating the drop in 2021/22.
