According to Voetbal Krant, Ajax are looking to re-sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld amid interest from rivals PSV Eindhoven.

It’s suggested that PSV have been looking to lure Alderweireld back to the Netherlands, but that has only gone and sparked Ajax’s interest.

Alderweireld first joined Ajax way back in 2004 as he left Germinal Beerschot in his native Belgium, and racked up 186 appearances for the club before leaving for Atletico Madrid in 2013.

The defender remains popular with Ajax fans, and the Amsterdam club certainly love to re-sign their former players; Maarten Stekelenburg, Davy Klaassen and Daley Blind are all back at the club right now.

Alderweireld is now 32, and whilst he still has two years left on his deal, Ajax could now look to lure him back to Amsterdam after a mixed season.

The Belgian is still an impressive performer, but he was left out at times by Jose Mourinho, and starting just 20 of 33 Premier League games this season has thrown his future into doubt.

What’s interesting is that Ajax’s move would be spearheaded by manager Erik ten Hag, who is now a leading contender for the Tottenham job according to The Telegraph.

If Ten Hag likes Alderweireld, the defender may be better off staying put at Spurs, as they could work together in North London next season and beyond.

The rumours come at an intriguing time given those Ten Hag links, and it will now be fascinating to see whether they join forces – whether that’s in Amsterdam or at Spurs.
