Tottenham Hotspur’s talks with Toby Alderweireld have reached an impasse as Manchester City lurk.
According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur’s negotiations with Toby Alderweireld over a new contract have reached an impasse.
The Belgian defender has been in talks with Spurs over extending his contract – which expires in 2020 – for much of the summer but he’s yet to put pen to paper.
And The Daily Mail claims that Tottenham’s attempts to tie him down have stalled, though the player and club remain keen on reaching an agreement.

However, the report goes on to claim that Manchester City, who have already signed Kyle Walker from the North Londoners this summer, are “long-term admirers” of the 28-year-old and would be able to “significantly” increase his salary at the Lilywhites.
Alderweirled, arguably Mauricio Pochettino’s most important defensive player, is only earning around £50,000-a-week with Tottenham, with Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane taking home more than twice that amount.
And while that is the case, Spurs are obviously going to be vulnerable, with left-back Danny Rose thrusting the club’s wage cap into the spotlight recently following an explosive interview in which he appeared to complain about his salary.
There is no major rush over a new deal for Alderweireld as long as he and the club are willing to extend, but chairman Daniel Levy will want a deal struck sooner rather than later.
