Aarons has failed to build on his early promise with Newcastle.

The Evening Chronicle has claimed that Rolando Aarons’ time at Newcastle United is “coming to an end”, after Rafa Benitez decided not to offer the winger a squad number for the 2018-19 campaign.

The 22-year-old began his Newcastle career in exciting fashion, finding the back of the net against Manchester City and Crystal Palace early on. But he has since stuttered at St. James’ Park.

Just 27 senior appearances at Newcastle to his name, the Jamaican-born England youth international has failed to recover from the long-term knee injury that kept him sidelined for the majority of the 2016-17 campaign.

A loan spell to Serie A side Hellas Verona during the second half of last season failed to reignite Aarons’ unlocked potential and now it seems that Benitez has lost patience trying to get the best out of the winger.

Indeed, Aarons has not been given a squad number by Benitez, along with midfielder Henri Saivet and that suggests he is surplus to requirements on Tyneside ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

The likes of Kenedy, Jacob Murphy, Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie all remain above Aarons in the pecking order, and a loan move to the Championship seems to be the most likely option. Three years still remain on his contract.
