Tim Krul is set to join Ajax – but only after signing a new contract with Newcastle.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul is set to join Ajax on loan – but not before signing a new contract at St. James’ Park.
Krul, 28, joined the Magpies from hometown club ADO Den Haag way back in 2006, and he’s now racked up almost 200 appearances for Newcastle since his arrival.

With ten years of service to the club, Krul is one of the longest-serving players at St. James’ Park, but speculation has surrounded his future in recent weeks.
Krul has been out with a knee injury, sustained on international duty with the Netherlands, since October, and his position at St. James’ Park is unclear due to the other options at Rafael Benitez’s disposal.

Newcastle saw Karl Darlow emerge at the end of last season, whilst Belgian international stopper Matz Sels arrived from Gent earlier this summer, meaning Krul is at best third choice, with youngster Freddie Woodman also highly rated.
Now, the Daily Mail report that Krul will in fact leave Newcastle imminently, penning a season-long loan deal with Ajax – but he will actually sign a new one-year deal with the Magpies before heading back to the Netherlands.

Ajax are set to lose their first-choice goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen to Barcelona, and Krul is being lined up as his replacement, with Newcastle subsidising some of his £60,000-a-week wages to facilitate the move.
Krul’s current deal expires next summer, and handing him an extra 12 months means that Newcastle protect themselves from losing Krul to Ajax – or anybody else – for free in a year’s time, whether he has a long-term future at Newcastle or not.
