Lucas Vazquez has rejected a contract renewal offer from La Liga champions Real Madrid as Leeds United circle around the Spain international, as reported by Marca.

It is fair to say The Whites have a rather mixed record when it comes to signing players from Los Blancos.

Raul Bravo managed just five Premier League appearances during a forgettable loan spell at Elland Road nearly 20 years ago, while Kiko Casilla split the fan base right down the middle before Ilan Meslier took his place in goal.

Then again, it is hard to imagine Vazquez failing to live up to expectations in West Yorkshire.

The three-time Champions League winner is a pillar of reliability, blossoming into a hugely important player at arguably the world’s biggest club.

These days, Vazquez is one of the first names on Zinedine Zidane’s team-sheet thanks to a series of tireless performances on the right side.

“Lucas is doing so well. He’s very reliable, very focused and it was only a matter of time before he started playing like this,” Zidane told Reuters after the 2-0 weekend victory over Celta Vigo.

You would imagine, then, that Zidane will be far from happy to learn that Vazquez, a free agent next summer, has rejected the chance to extend his contract in the Spanish capital.

With Leeds interested, could the 29-year-old be holding out for a fresh start after half a decade under the microscope at Real Madrid (Mail)?
