According to The Athletic, Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has signed a contract extension.

It has been reported that Gayle’s contract was due to run out at the end of the season, but the striker has agreed an extension that will keep him at Newcastle until the summer of 2024.

The report published this morning (8am) has added that the new deal that the former Crystal Palace striker has signed is on reduced terms.

Are Newcastle United preparing for the Championship?

Gayle has not been a massive hit for Newcastle in the Premier League and is struggling for playing time at the moment.

According to WhoScored, the 31-year-old striker has made just two starts and nine substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Magpies so far this season, scoring one goal in the process.

However, the striker has a very good record in the Championship, and with the Magpies in real danger of getting relegated from the Premier League, perhaps Steve Bruce’s side are already preparing for life in the second tier of English football.

Gayle scored 24 goals in the Championship during his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion in 2018-19 and scored 23 goals in the division for Newcastle in 2016-17, according to WhoScored.
