According to a report from the Chronicle, Thierry Henry is ready to let Antonio Barreca leave Monaco after Newcastle made a loan bid for the defender this week.

The Magpies are looking for their first signing of the January transfer window, but it appears that Rafa Benitez is being given more encouraging news on that front.

The Chronicle reports that loan bids have been made for Barreca and Gelson Martins, with Newcastle’s offers leaving scope for permanent deals to be done further down the line.

The Chronicle adds that Henry is happy to let Barreca leave the Principality this month, so the Magpies now need to agree a loan fee and personal terms before they perhaps land their first addition of the window.

Barreca would address an area of concern for Benitez with the Spaniard looking to sign more depth at left-back. Paul Dummett is the one natural option that Benitez seems to trust in that role.

And while a loan deal for a player who is not playing regularly for a relegation-threatened Ligue 1 side is not the kind of move that will get the fans flocking to St James’ Park for an unveiling, it is an encouraging step forward, for this window at least.
